Columbiers-Homps 11 April

All the working on the locks resulted in deep sleep all night. Off again at 9 am, heading for a place called Homps but that depends on waiting time at the locks. I wonder what the Canal Mdi is like in summer.
There are hundreds of boats to hire all along the canal. Le Boat seems to be the most popular.

Just an example of the hire boats along the way.

A few km out of Colliers we had to go through the Malgas Tunnel, 160 m long, and no problem at all.
We have read that the trees along the canal have been infected with a sickness, canker stain. The infected tress have to be chopped down. It is very sad to see the enormous stumps of these probably very old trees.

A line of tree stumps. We have seen that the roots of these trees seem to build the wall of the canal. If so, we wonder what happens when chopped down. How long before the roots rot away?
It is getting warmer and the sun comes out every now and then. The surroundings are getting more beautiful. This is a typical town we passed through.
A border collie, Iris, was guarding a double lock. She was so busy running up and down and "herding" the boats as border collies are supposed to do. Reminds us of our Nellie.
Arrived in Homps just after 16.00. No use carrying on because the locks close at 18.00.
We are parked in the centre of the "village". There is one shop and wine cellar here. The wines are from the Minervoirs region, which is where we are. Have stocked up and now the tasting begins.
The upstream trip is going fast because we have to be in Toulouse by the 18 th April, but will explore more of our way back.
