Les - Roche -de - Condrieu - Lyon 15 May

Another conference about whether we should continue today or not. This time it is not a rain check but Leslie thinking that the Rhone is flowing altogether too fast to venture out on, but Carl promised that Lellebelle can manage and we left at about 10.30.
Our place on the visitors pontoon in l-R-d-Condrieu. ( why do they have so many names in French?) From the inside of the pontoon it looks calm but out there in the river is hell.

Trying to catch a photo of the fast moving whirlpools.
The tower of Valois in Vienne is the only remaining structure of the 14th century fortifications erected by King Philippe VI ( now that's a new king for me!)
Passing through Vienne. On one of the 5 hills around which the town is built, the ruins of the Chateau of la Batie built in the 13 th century.
Goodbye Rhone, hello Saone! Here we are at the "Confluence" of the two rivers . We turned left onto the Saone. The silver building is the Confluence Museum, which we plan to visit tomorrow.
The Rhone goes off to the right. It is navigable about 7 km upstream after which it becomes too shallow. I found the Rhone much tougher than I imagined. There are not so many ports which means long distances, especially going upstream. It becomes more interesting, rather, prettier, the further up we travelled.

And hello to Lyon! What an entrance, what buildings. This is the Euronews building. Big eyes but no ears?
These modern buildings on the right hand side of the Saone
And the left hand side more sedate.
And another crazy building.
Port Confluence, right in the centre. Surrounded by cafes and very modern apartment buildings. Notice the black thing sticking out further than any of the balconies of the other buildings.  Carl thinks that it is the place to live in when in Lyon.
