We travelled back up the Petit Rhone and managed to get a photo of this apparently famous bridge, the Foutques bridge.
This bridge was built in1838, an is one of the oldest and most attractive suspension bridges in the Rhone valley.
Entering the Rhone. Now we set course for Höllviken!
The castle in the town Tarascon, built by Charles 1 of Anjou, demolished and rebuilt by Louis Ii of Anjou in the 15 th century. Quite a busy life they must have had in those days. Building and demolishing, building again, all for honour, maybe?
First lock on the Rhone. Is it possible that we miss the cute little manual locks from Canal Midi? Quite scary going into this dark hole.
A commercial ship coming out of the lock.
Approaching Avignon. Shows a lot of promise. Pity the luxury boats spoil the photo.
Sur le Pont Avignon.........planning to visit tomorrow.
Took An evening walk up to Rocher Des Doms and had this wonderful view of the Rhone flowing off in the distance.
An arm of the Rhone where we have Lellebelle moored.
Pont d'Avignon.
Palais de Pap
Another view.
We have discovered that we know absolutely nothing about the history of Avignon and the story of the Popes. So it is research time again, Carl giving a one hour Wikipedia lecture on the Popes of Avignon and much more. So when we set off the discover Avignon we will at least not be so ignorant.
