Set our goal to a place called Niderviller. This involved 23 locks, an inclined slope and two tunnels.
Lovely morning, beautiful countryside.Entering Saverne, a beautiful town bathed in sulight today. Read that it has a Rose garden with 1300 varieties of roses. But we did not stay.
The Chateau Rohan in the middle of the town.
Just some scenes along the way.
Passed through a really delightful town, Lutzelbourgh.
The church in Lutzelbourgh. It is difficult to take photos and takes care of locks at the same time. As soon as there is a good photo, a new lock appears and in the preparation I forget the photo. But there are countless beautiful photos one could take.
After Lutzelbourgh there were three locks before entering the the Inclined slope.
The Inclined slope. Originally there was a staircase of 17 locks to the watershed. To make it easier a transversal inclined plane was built. The vertical height of this structure is 44,55 m and the horizontal length is 128,65 m. The container has an overall length of 43 m and weights 850 tons when filled with water. Two counter weights, also weighing 850 tons, are sufficient to haul the structure up the slope. The construction was completed in 1969. It took 8 hours to go through the locks, with the water slope it takes 25 minutes.
View front the top.

Three km to the first tunnel
Entering the 2,3 km tunnel. Next tunnel about 450 m.
And after a long hard working day, at the port in Niderviller. Farmland, with the town Niderviller about 880 m away. The town had one bakery, closed Monday and Tuesday, one Tabac, closed, hairdresser and a pharmacy. There is also a porcelain factory, which we gather is well known, but since it is closed on Mondays, we have not found out more about it.
Celebrating Swedish national day. Lots of friendly people moored here, all with conflicting information on the status of the canal in the direction of Nancy. Some say the water level is too high. Some say a lock is Kaput and so on. We will have to see tomorrow, maybe the VNF can give us correct information.
Entertained by these 3 ducks. They spent a long time quacking around the boat, but they were not interested in food. Two males and a female, a lot of rivalry going on!
